GIANT ROBOT MEDIA
Brand Identity, Editorial, Layout Design, Art & Creative Directiongn
For over two decades, Giant Robot documented the artists, filmmakers, chefs, musicians, and creators shaping Asian American culture long before they entered the mainstream. As the publication transitioned from print to digital, the challenge wasn't simply launching a new website: it was preserving the curiosity, irreverence, and editorial spirit that made the magazine influential in the first place.
Working alongside founder Eric Nakamura, I led the creative direction and brand for Giant Robot Media, translating the visual language of the original magazine into a contemporary digital platform. We refreshed the brand identity, evolving the iconic "Big Boss" robot into a more versatile mark optimized for digital media while maintaining its connection to the publication's history. Every design decision was guided by the same question: how do you make a digital magazine feel as collectible and culturally relevant as the printed issues that inspired a generation?
That philosophy extended to the editorial experience. Photography became the centerpiece of the website, allowing every story to begin with a compelling visual rather than a headline. We built an intuitive publishing system that enabled contributors across the country to collaborate while maintaining a cohesive editorial voice.
Growth came from original storytelling rather than volume. We focused on uncovering emerging artists, restaurants, designers, and cultural movements before they reached mainstream attention, producing exclusive features that were later referenced by publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Eater, and Bon Appétit. Beyond the screen, we extended the brand into exhibitions, concerts, and community events that reconnected longtime readers while introducing Giant Robot to a new generation.
The result was more than a magazine relaunch. It was the evolution of a cultural institution, carrying Giant Robot's legacy into a new era while remaining true to the independent spirit that made it iconic.
